About this canvas

The obi fabric is tinted in a cherry blossom hue, adorned with swirling silver elements that evoke the imagery of fireworks bursting open in the twilight sky.

Period / Story

The obi used in this canvas was created during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This artistic piece features a symbolic swirl pattern intricately embroidered with silver pieces on a cherry-pink obi.

The vortex pattern, characterized by its curvilinear design that radiates outward from the center in a spiral shape, has been cherished by people from ancient times. While the whirlpool motif is associated with water, it also carries a symbolism of eternity. This pattern serves as a reminder that everything in the world follows a life cycle, embracing both birth and rebirth.

Characteristics of the fabric

Koma-itching or koma-dori is an embroidery technique that involves using thick threads or gold and silver threads, which cannot be directly threaded through an embroidery needle. Instead, these threads are wound around a wooden piece, similar to a thread winder. This wrapped piece is then rolled, and the embroidery threads are laid over the underlying fabric and secured with a binding thread.

The incorporation of gold and silver threads in this technique lends a three-dimensional richness to the intricate and delicate details of the pattern, adding a touch of glamorous charm to the artwork.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
