About this canvas

The deep green pine trees on this kimono canvas are embroidered with a gradation technique, illustrating the gradual transition of tree branches as they prepare for autumn. This meticulous embroidery captures the changing colors with varying depths and shades.

Period/Story

The kimono featured in this canvas was crafted and used during the late Showa period, likely dating from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The canvas features the "Kasamatsu" pine tree pattern - pines are extending gracefully over the white waves. This pattern symbolizes a robust pine tree growing steadfastly on the cliffs by the ocean.

Kasamatsu is a classic pine tree motif. Its name, "kasamatsu," is derived from the pine tree's leaves and branches, which spread out horizontally, resembling a hat or "kasa."

In East Asia, the pine tree is regarded as a symbol of longevity, owing to its lush green leaves even during the winter months. In Japan, it is often referred to as the "evergreen tree" due to its persistent green foliage and has traditionally been associated with good luck. The kadomatsu, a pine tree decoration displayed at the entrance of homes during the New Year, is believed to symbolize the welcoming of deities and blessings into the household.

Description of fabric characteristics

The pattern is enriched with hand-dyed gold threads and traditional Japanese embroidery, giving it an authentic and luxurious touch. Some of the embroidery threads have naturally faded over time due to aging, but this aging process actually complements the gradation of colors, evoking a sense of seasonal change and adding charm to the canvas.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
