About this canvas

This willow and amaryllis Yuzen overlay canvas is created by layering two kimono fabrics, harnessing the dynamic qualities of the lower kimono fabric and the translucence of the upper kimono fabric.

Period / Story

Both kimonos used in this canvas originate from the early Showa period (1920-40ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This hand-painted yuzen canvas showcases striking red amaryllis petals with a subtle grayish tone. The amaryllis, delicately painted in soft colors, appears as if it's a single, unified painting. Amaryllis was introduced to Japan towards the end of the Edo period (1603-1867).

The name "Amaryllis" itself originates from the beautiful shepherdess Amaryllis, a figure found in ancient Greek and Roman poetry. Many may also associate Amaryllis with the melodious French folk song "Amaryllis." With its distinctive character and presence, Amaryllis is often used as a motif on kimonos and obis, reflecting its Western origins.

Characteristics of the fabric 

This canvas is crafted by layering a kimono fabric adorned with hand-painted amaryllis atop another kimono fabric featuring vibrant monochromatic willow patterns. The two patterns intersect through the gauze fabric, resulting in a rich and layered expression.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
