About this canvas

This set comprises an obi adorned with auspicious flower and tree patterns within a fan motif, paired with a kimono featuring a fan motif embodied over ocean waves.

Period / Story

The kimono and obi used in this canvas were created during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This canvas is made from upcycled obi featuring a fan motif adorned with a colorful weave of trees and flowers, auspicious patterns like pine, bamboo, plum, and chrysanthemum.

The fan motif is one of the most celebrated patterns symbolizing prosperity, owing to its resemblance to the unfolding shape of a fan.

The colorful and intricately detailed auspicious patterns of pine, bamboo, plum, and chrysanthemum add a somewhat charming touch to the bold fan pattern.

Despite the use of various colors such as red, turquoise, and purple, the overall ambiance remains calm and elegant.

On the right, the original kimono features a distinctive large ocean waves pattern overlaid with intricate ocean wave patterns dyed in gold leaf at various locations. Additionally, small red and orange embroidered fans dance gracefully within the gold leaf areas.

"Seigaiha" represents a pattern of waves that seem to stretch infinitely and is regarded as an auspicious motif, symbolizing wishes for eternal happiness and a peaceful life for all.

Characteristics of the fabric

The left canvas features a gold-based obi fabric, traditionally worn on formal occasions.

On the right, there's a lustrous kimono fabric dyed in an elegant ivory hue, with a background pattern of ocean waves subtly woven into the design. While this festive kimono maintains its formality, it stands out as a distinctive piece by avoiding easily recognizable motifs and instead showing intricate embroidery on dyed gold leaf to deliver its artistic expression.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
