About this canvas

This artwork presents a contemporary reinterpretation of patterns on red and black silk obi, in the style of a traditional folk costume. The pattern resembles the eyes of an animal, giving it a unique and modern twist.

Period / Story

The obi featured in this canvas was crafted and used during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The glistening diamond-shaped pattern on this canvas appears as if it were boldly hand-drawn onto the rugged, hand-woven texture.

This classic diamond pattern imparts the sense of a folk costume. The chic combination of red and black creates a striking, high-impact color scheme that greatly appeals to those who owes it.

Characteristics of the fabric

Obi used here is crafted from tsumugi silk weaving, known for its coarse texture. Tsumugi weaving involves the use of silk threads, and in comparison to silk fabrics created from raw silk threads, it possesses less shine and a smoother surface, resulting in a rugged, rustic texture. While many tsumugi fabrics feature striped or geometric patterns, recent innovations in dyeing techniques have allowed for the creation of gradients and various other expressions.

The tsumugi silk is lightweight, robust, and has a flexible feel, making it particularly well-suited for kimonos and obis. The unique unevenness and knots that manifest in certain areas, a characteristic exclusive to tsumugi weaving, lend this piece an expressive and distinctive appearance.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.

Precaution

All the works are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintages. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damages. In case there are any scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before purchasing. Regarding precaution, cancellation and refund policy, please refer to the refund policy in the footer section of the site for information.
