About this canvas

The haze pattern of the obi has been reimagined, with its orientation turned horizontally to evoke the appearance of rain. Similarly, the ocean wave pattern on the kimono has been inverted and transformed to resemble ripples radiating from the falling raindrops. This contemporary interpretation breathes new life into the traditional Japanese patterns, creating a unique and visually engaging composition.

Period / Story

The kimono and obi used in this canvas were crafted and worn during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The haze pattern on the upper canvas, resembling rain, consists of multiple horizontally drawn straight lines. This technique, used in art since ancient times, is often employed in both dyeing and weaving to create landscape patterns. It imbues the overall design with an elegant atmosphere. The haze pattern also serves to convey a sense of perspective and the passage of time, symbolizing "eternity" in its recurring appearance and disappearance.

The ripples on the bottom canvas are depicted by ocean waves traditional pattern. The upper part of the canvas features a delicate ocean wave pattern dyed in beaten gold, skillfully gradated with the "rain" motif of the obi. The ocean wave pattern is traditionally considered auspicious, symbolizing wishes for eternal happiness and a peaceful life.

Characteristics of the fabric

The canvas above is made from upcycled gold-based obi, typically worn on formal occasions. The simplicity of the haze pattern expressed on the reverse side of the obi reflects the meticulous attention to detail of the original craftsmanship.

The canvas below features ocean waves, presented in a jimon (ground pattern), floating on a lustrous kimono ground dyed in an elegant ivory color. Despite being suitable for formal occasions, this festive kimono takes a unique approach by avoiding easily recognizable motifs, opting instead for small embroidery details on dyed gold leaf to create its distinctive character.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
