About this canvas

Red and purple striped pattern on this antique kimono canvas symbolizes parent-and-child connection.  

Period/Story

The kimono used for this canvas was made and used in Taisho period (early 20th century).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

Straightly flowing stripe pattern has been very popular as a fashionable pattern since the Edo period (1603-1867), and was very popular mainly among urban people. The "child stripe" pattern, in which stripes of different thicknesses are lined up, is one of the many stripe patterns, and consists of a thick stripe and a thin stripe side by side. The name comes from the fact that the thick lines are lined up with thin lines, like a parent and child.

Description of fabric characteristics

The striped pattern is dyed by traditional print dyeing. The two colors of red and purple are the sign that probably the kimono was worn in daily life as a casual clothes. This type of kimono with repeated pattern is called "komon".

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones!
