About this canvas

This delightful small kimono canvas features a chrysanthemum pattern that shimmers and reflects light beautifully.

Period/Story

This canvas has been repurposed from a naga-juban (under-kimono) dating back to the late Showa period, around 1980ies.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The chrysanthemum holds a special place as an auspicious symbol of longevity. The name of this pattern, "mujina-giku," literally translates to "raccoon dog chrysanthemum" in Japanese, referring to the chrysanthemum's large, overlapping petals that resemble the fur of a mujina, or raccoon dog. This pattern is highly favored in various plant motif designs and finds frequent use in Edo komon (repeated painted patterns), katazome (traditionally printed patterns), and jimon (woven patterns, as seen in this piece).

Furthermore, because this juban (under-kimono) remains in its natural, undyed white state, it was originally tailored and worn for formal occasions. Its pure white silk has a radiant sheen when exposed to light, enhancing the distinctive and beautiful woven patterns that adorn it.

Description of fabric characteristics

This exquisite naga-juban, worn beneath a kimono, is fashioned from rinzu silk, known for its satin-like texture. Rinzu silk is thinner compared to crepe silk, offering a lustrous, soft, and remarkably smooth feel. The chrysanthemum pattern on this juban has been meticulously handwoven, adding to its exceptional craftsmanship and beauty.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
