About this canvas

Fantastic white phoenix tail depicted on this kimono canvas is a true masterpiece of Japanese traditional craft.

Period/Story

The kimono used for this canvas was made and used in early Showa period (probably 30ies to 40ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The tail of a phoenix floats on a silver, glowing canvas as a scene from a legend.

The phoenix has long been considered a legendary bird of good omen in China, and is thought to be a symbol of peace and happiness. Phoenix eggs are believed to be a miracle cure for longevity, and the phoenix itself is also associated with the meaning of "longevity" and "rejuvenation. It was introduced to Japan in the Nara period (710-794) and is often seen in treasures such as the Shosoin Repository.

Description of fabric characteristics

The tail of a phoenix is drawn in traditional technique called "hand-dyed yuzen". The beautiful transparency of the white part is made of a pigment called gofun (胡粉). Gofun is the first pigment used to draw a pattern on a pure white fabric, and the overall color is only revealed when the base color is dyed at the end. It is a very difficult technique, and in the past, the use of gofun was considered a secret method by the Kano school (the oldest painting school in Japan, beginning from 15th cent.) and others.

The silk type is called “chirimen”. It is often used in children’s kimono due to its’ soft touch. This chirimen was made in Tango - an area around Kyoto famous for its’ traditions of weaving and dying since 17th century.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
