About this canvas

A transparent haori is layered over an antique furoshiki wrapping cloth adorned with a bamboo design, creating a beautiful bamboo-themed set.

Period / Story

The furoshiki and haori featured in this canvas were crafted and utilized during the early Showa period (1920-40ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

Both the furoshiki and haori are adorned with a bamboo pattern.

Bamboo has been revered as a symbol of good fortune since ancient times, owing to its tall and robust growth, as well as the Chinese legend that a phoenix feeds on its fruit.

Bamboo also carries the symbolism of "immortality," "longevity," and "strength" because it remains vibrant even in the winter, and "innocence" due to its hollow stem.

Characteristics of the fabric

Ra-ori is a thinly woven, breathable silk fabric known for its coarse texture. It is primarily used for summer haori and obi, due to its large, airy holes.

One of Ra-ori's key characteristics is its ability to provide comfort in hot summers, achieved by creating deliberate gaps during the weaving process. The weaving technique of Ra-ori is reminiscent of a "net" used for catching birds, as the warp threads intricately interlace on both sides, resulting in a robust fabric with a rough texture.

This particular set, with its green hues and distinctive texture, imparts a cool and refreshing sensation to those who look at it.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
