About this canvas

This is a set of three upcycled antique obi canvases, each crafted using a different weaving technique, all featuring an auspicious golden pine tree motif. Despite they are made from different obi, they share the same pattern and color palette, creating a harmonious and well-coordinated pine tree patterns collection.

Period / Story

All three obi featured in this canvas originate from the late Showa period.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

All three canvas are made from different obi but feature the same pine tree pattern, each with its unique variation.

Starting from the left canvas, it displays a pine tree pattern that is woven in a manner resembling a feathered tortoise shell. The middle canvas showcases a so-called Matsubishi pattern, with pine branches in a diamond shape, while the right canvas features a so-called Kasamatsu pattern - pine branches in a shape of umbrella, surrounded by clouds. The turtle shell pattern, with its regular hexagonal geometry, has been a highly popular and auspicious design in Japan since ancient times due to its association with the turtle, symbolizing longevity and good fortune.

The pine tree, considered a symbol of longevity and immortality in East Asia, remains green throughout the year, earning it the name "evergreen tree." It has been regarded as a tree of luck and protection against evil forces. The kadomatsu pine decoration displayed at the gates of homes during New Year's serves to welcome deities.

Clouds, on the other hand, have long fascinated people as a sing of big changes, symbolizing transitions and transformations. If you examine closely, you'll notice the interconnectivity of the lines and patterns, showcasing meticulous attention to detail in the creation of this artwork.

Characteristics of the fabric

The originals of all three canvases were crafted using gold threads as a primary material. These pieces feature luxurious and festive obi adorned with intricate patterns woven from layers of gold threads on a gold leaf ground. They were well-suited for formal celebrations and special occasions.
