About this canvas

This canvas set uses an obi fabric with Chinese embroidery - a type of embroidery, commonly used in traditional Japan as well, it is very rare nowadays. Fans intricately embroidered on fabric, are a auspicious symbol bringing luck and new opportunities.

Period / Story

Obi used for this canvas was made during the Taisho period (around 1910).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

In Japanese tradition, the fan motif, or ōgi (扇), symbolizes prosperity, growth, and good fortune. Fans are seen as auspicious because they open outward, representing the expansion of good luck and success. The shape of the fan, which widens from a single point, also symbolizes paths opening up and life’s possibilities expanding.

Fans are commonly used in art, kimono, and interior decoration, often combined with motifs like cherry blossoms, cranes, or waves to enhance their positive symbolism. In addition, fans are tied to elegance and cultural refinement, frequently appearing in traditional performances like Noh and Kabuki, further connecting them with grace and aesthetic beauty in Japanese culture.

Characteristics of the fabric

This intricate embroidery was originally born in China in 7th century, and then became popular in Japan as well, being a luxurious kind of fabric decor up to beginning of 20th century. Now it's very hard to find the examples of Chinese embroidery in Japanese traditional textile.
